Outlines for Talks
These are outlines that I used to give various talks. They are just my outlines. Please forgive their sketchy nature they were originally intended only for my eyes. I am posting them here because several people asked me to.
I have posted them in two formats:
A PDF version of that document
An HTML that Word generated. This version flattens all of the spacing and indenting, But loads very fast
These are the program descriptions from the talks.
Reading in Good Time
Enjoy the company of parents who are not freaked-out by letting their children develop reading skills in their own time. This session will discuss the emphasis in early reading in the classroom setting and the benefits that unschooling has in allowing your child the time, without the assembly line pressures, to approach reading when they have the ability and are ready to develop joy and satisfaction in it. Some people develop the ability to read earlier and some people later than others. It is just as we all learned to walk and talk at different times in our lives, so too with reading. Feel relaxed, confident and encouraged that this ability will develop in your child.
Embrace the Internet
A person with a computer connected to the internet is 45 seconds away from information about anything. It is an ocean of information waiting to be explored. We will be examining ways to approach incorporating it safely into your home. Encourage your child’s natural instincts to learn and explore without fear of the unknown.
The Riches of Video Gaming
What is it about video games that make them so attractive and such a rich source of learning? . The ability and desire to “make believe” has been important to humans since the beginning. Video gaming is a complex tool of development, entertainment and interaction. This session will help calm the fears of the unknown, exploring the many facets of life, learning, problem solving, meaning, discovery, probing, complex relations, active critical review, identity, simulation, culture, and tactics that are incorporated in video gaming. Encourage your children to explore their extremes in the safety of your home
The Benefits of Television
Some families limit or ban television in their homes, in an attempt to protect
their children. See and hear how television can be used to experience and explore
the world around us. Discussion will include strategies for making viewing
an active pursuit and how to harvest the bountiful programming in the commercial
filled landscape of television. Hints and examples of how to explore and find
the rich educational, artistic, and entertaining programming you want to watch.
How to empower your children to make good choices for themselves.
